Welcome!

Multnomah County Commissioners to Honor Rosa Parks

On Thursday, 12/01/05, 9:30am, Rights 101 Oregon will be attending the weekly meeting of the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, at which our county will issue a proclamation honoring the life and legacy of Rosa Parks on the 50th Anniversary of her 12/01/55 bus ride that moved the struggle for civil rights and human dignity from the courts to the streets. We wholeheartedly encourage you to join us.

Parks' refusal to relinquish her seat on the bus for an able-bodied white man was the spark that ignited the civil rights movement. With one brief action, she demanded that all people be treated with dignity and justice. She demanded nothing more than respect and equal treatment under the law for all humans.

50 years later, we can see that there remains much work to be done. Blacks, and other minorities in America, still face barriers to the attainment of racial equity. In some regards, we have even stepped backwards. For example, our government has, in response to 9/11, denied immigrants the same legal rights to which they were formerly entitled (this article briefly discusses Section 412 of the USA PATRIOT Act). Even as of this writing (November 18th, 2005), our US Senate has approved Senator Graham's amendment to the Defense spending bill, which, if it passes, would deny Guantanamo detainees their right to file habeas corpus petitions (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/14/AR2005111401508.html).

In the spirit of Rosa Parks, and in recognition of the need to continue working together to protect equal rights and human dignity for all people, Rights 101 Oregon will be present at the weekly meeting of the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners. It is our intention to honor Rosa Parks. It is our intention to thank Multnomah County for adopting Multnomah County Resolution No. 04-183 Expressing Commitment to Protect Civil Rights in the Era of the USA Patriot Act and asking Oregon’s Congressional Delegation to Oppose Legislation that Infringes Upon Those Rights (as we approach its one-year anniversary, December 9th, 2004). It is our intention to express appreciation, too, for the County’s long-standing anti-discrimination policy.

At this same meeting, we also plan to present the Multnomah County Library system with a box of copies of our publication, SPEAKING OUT To Protect Civil Rights and to Reduce Discrimination and Harassment in the Era of the U.S.A. PATRIOT ACT: Report from the Public Hearing. http://www.rights101oregon.org/MCresolution/SpeakingOutReport.pdf

We see this as part of our ongoing work of providing people with trustworthy information about the history and meaning of our Bill of Rights, and of the need for working together tirelessly to protect civil rights and human dignity.
